A fine-gauge knit set with a frill collar

A two-piece knitted baby set: a button-front cardigan with a decorative frill collar and floral detailing, and matching long trousers. It is knitted at 12 gauge, a finer setting than a standard baby jumper, giving a smoother, lighter fabric with more definition in the stitch.

This is a lightweight knit rather than a warm one - right for mild spring and autumn days, or an air-conditioned room in summer. The cardigan buttons at the front, so nothing is pulled over the head.

Fabric and safety

The yarn is 84% cotton for softness and breathability, with 16% nylon. The nylon matters at this gauge: a fine knit in pure cotton sags at the collar and cuffs, and the nylon is what keeps the frill sitting up and the ribbing springy through repeated washes.

The set is graded safety class A - the strictest of the three textile safety grades and the one required for clothing worn by infants under three. It sets tighter limits on formaldehyde, pH and colour fastness than the grades applied to older children's and adult clothing.

Size guide

Measurements are flat, in centimetres, and may vary by 1-2cm. Chest is a half-measurement, so the full circumference is double the figure shown.

Flat measurements for size 66 have not been published by the maker. Contact us before ordering that size and we will confirm them.

Fit notes

The size number is the child's height in centimetres, so size 80 is cut for a child of around 80cm rather than a set age. Height is the more reliable guide here.

The set is cut close to the body. If your child is between two sizes, or you want room to layer underneath, take the larger size. The cardigan can be worn open or buttoned and the frill sits flat either way. The waistband stretches over a nappy and the cuffs turn up on smaller sizes.

Styling

The cardigan works over a plain bodysuit or a simple cotton dress, and the collar does enough that nothing else needs to compete with it. Keep accessories plain - a solid cotton hat and soft-soled shoes. Once outgrown as a set, the trousers carry on with a plain top.

Care

• Hand wash below 30°C, light and dark colours separately
• Fasten the buttons before washing to stop the placket stretching
• Dry flat and reshape the collar while damp - do not wring or twist
• Dry away from direct sunlight; do not soak for long periods
• A little colour may lift in the first two washes
• Loose cotton fibres on a new garment rinse away in the first wash
• Light pilling is normal on knitted cotton - lift pills with a fabric shaver

What is not included

The set is the cardigan and trousers only. Hats, booties, socks, bodysuits, blankets, toys and other items in the photographs are styling props and are not supplied.
