A lightweight knit set with a bear motif

A two-piece knitted baby set: a button-front cardigan with a round neck and a bear motif, and matching long trousers. The cardigan fastens with a single row of buttons, so nothing is pulled over the head - which matters at this age far more than it sounds like it should.

This is a thin knit rather than a warm one. It suits mild spring and autumn days worn on its own over a bodysuit, or an air-conditioned room in summer where a jersey layer alone would not be enough. Three colours: a soft grey, a mid blue and a warm apricot.

Fabric and safety

The yarn is 84% cotton for softness and breathability, with 16% nylon. The nylon is what keeps a thin knit from sagging - it holds the cuffs and hem ribbing springy and stops the button placket dropping out of shape through repeated washes.

The set is graded safety class A - the strictest of the three textile safety grades and the one required for clothing worn by infants under three. It sets tighter limits on formaldehyde, pH and colour fastness than the grades applied to older children's and adult clothing.

Size guide

Measurements are flat, in centimetres, and may vary by 1-3cm between batches. Chest is a half-measurement, so the full circumference is double the figure shown.

Fit notes

The size number is the child's height in centimetres, so size 80 is cut for a child of around 80cm rather than a set age. Height is the more reliable guide here.

The set is cut close to the body. If your child is between two sizes, or you want room to layer underneath, take the larger size. The cardigan can be worn open or buttoned. The waistband stretches over a nappy and the cuffs turn up on smaller sizes.

Styling

The cardigan works over a plain bodysuit or long-sleeve top, and since the motif is doing the talking everything else can stay solid. Add plain booties and a solid cotton hat. Once the set is outgrown as a pair, the trousers carry on with a plain top.

Care

• Hand wash below 30°C, light and dark colours separately
• Fasten the buttons before washing to stop the placket stretching
• Dry flat and reshape while damp - do not wring or twist
• Dry away from direct sunlight; do not soak for long periods
• Loose cotton fibres on a new garment rinse away in the first wash
• Light pilling is normal on knitted cotton - lift pills with a fabric shaver

What is not included

The set is the cardigan and trousers only. Hats, booties, socks, bodysuits, blankets and toys in the photographs are styling props and are not supplied.
